4 Tips To Feng Shui Your Home

If your home is feeling stale and you can’t quite figure out why, it could be time rearrange and reorganize in a way that creates a positive flow of energy. “Feng shui” is defined by Merriam-Webster as “a Chinese geomantic practice in which a structure or site is chosen or configured so as to harmonize with the spiritual forces that inhabit it.” In layman's terms, you can arrange different areas of your home to promote more positive feelings in each space.

Check out the following tips to create feng shui in your home. And for items that don’t promote the positive flow of energy, keep them in a storage unit at Just Store It! in Fort Collins.

Air Quality & Light

Having high-quality air and light is one of the first steps to creating better feng shui energy (also called Chi) in your home. You can improve the quality of air in your home by opening windows often, placing air-purifying plants around your home, or using an air purifier.

Clean your windows so grime doesn’t distract you from the natural light. Keep blinds and curtains open while the sun is up to fill your home with as much natural light as possible. You can also purchase full-spectrum light bulbs for some fixtures in your home if there are areas that get little-to-no natural light.

Cut The Clutter

There’s nothing that blocks the flow of energy in your home like clutter. There is a physical response to having too many things in your home that you don’t use or care about. You can become distracted and stressed without really knowing why. The culprit is all the extra stuff you have laying around.

Take the time to go through each room of your home and decide what you can get rid of. You may not even need to “get rid” of it either! If you own belongings that hold sentimental value or you plan on living in a larger space someday where you’ll actually have room for all of these items, put them in storage. Find a climate-controlled storage unit where furniture and valuables will be kept in good condition while you’re not using them.

Define Your Home’s Energy Map

A feng shui energy map, also called the Bagua, is how you can lay out your home to promote energy in different areas of your life. There are nine categories in the Bagua that correspond to different areas of your home:

  • Wealth: Southeast
  • Fame: South
  • Love and marriage: Southwest
  • Creativity: West
  • Helpful people and travel: Northwest
  • Career: North
  • Spiritual growth: Northeast
  • Health: East
  • Yin and yang (the balance of all energies): Center

Once you’ve identified which areas of your home correspond to which energies, you can start to arrange them in ways that promote the flow of those energies.

Understand Corresponding Elements

Each area of your home associated with a type of energy also has an element associated with it. These elements are:

  • Wood: wealth, health
  • Fire: fame
  • Earth: love and marriage, creativity
  • Metal: creativity, helpful people and travel
  • Water: career, spiritual growth, water

If there’s an area of your life where you want to promote the flow of energy, add items associated with these elements to the corresponding areas of your home. For example, add plants to the southeast area of your home (representative of water and wood) to promote prosperity.

With these basic feng shui tips, you’re well on your way to creating a more balanced and harmonious environment in your home. For clutter that you don’t want to get rid of, rent a storage unit at Just Store It! in Fort Collins. We are dedicated to clean, secure, and convenient storage for you!
